The government is firmly committed to reopening the country’s closed state-owned sugar mills, Industries, Commerce, Textiles and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said today (9 May).
“Decisions on reopening the mills would prioritise the interests of sugarcane growers, workers and the long-term profitability of the institutions,” he said while speaking as chief guest at an exchange meeting with sugarcane growers held at the premises of Panchagar Sugar Mills Ltd.
“These mills are assets of the people of Bangladesh. Ensuring their proper and effective use is the government’s responsibility,” he said.
“We want the closed factories to resume production, create employment and bring new momentum to local economies,” he added.
Muktadir said several sugar mills in the country remain closed, while many operating mills are running under various limitations.
He said most mills are between 50 and 70 years old, making modernisation, renovation and the addition of new technology essential for their effective revival.
“Some mills will require new machinery, some will need infrastructure renovation, while alternative plans may have to be considered for others,” the minister said.
“However, in every case, the interests of sugarcane growers, workers’ employment and profitable operation will be ensured,” he added.
The minister said a functioning factory creates employment opportunities not only for direct workers but also for many others through related economic activities.
He said reopening closed mills was therefore important for the country’s overall economic activity and poverty reduction.
“Increased employment will boost local economic activity and help reduce poverty. The government is moving forward with industrial revival keeping that goal in mind,” he said.
The meeting was chaired by Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) Chairman Md Jahangir Alam.
Panchagarh-1 MP Barrister Nawshad Zamir and Industries Secretary Md Obaidur Rahman spoke as special guests.
