Govt appoints Prof Mahbub Ullah as national professor

The government has appointed eminent economist and former pro-vice-chancellor of the National University Professor Mahbub Ullah as a national professor for a five-year term under the National Professor Policy 2023.

The appointment was confirmed by the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education through a notification issued today (27 July).

Under the appointment, Mahbub Ullah will not be considered a government employee. He will conduct research at an institution of his choice and receive salary and other benefits equivalent to Grade 1 of the National Pay Scale 2015.

He, however, will not be allowed to hold any other salaried position during the tenure, the notification added.

Prof Mahbub Ullah was a leading student leader of the 1960s and the first pro-vice-chancellor of the National University.

He earned his PhD in Economics after higher studies and research at Boston University and Jawaharlal Nehru University.

He taught at the University of Chittagong and the University of Dhaka between 1976 and 2011 and has been associated with several international research organisations, including IDRC, ICIMOD, Bids and Denmark’s Centre for Development Research (CDR).
