Five members of a family sustained burn injuries in an explosion caused by a suspected gas leak in Fatullah of Narayanganj this morning (10 May), fire service officials said.
The incident took place at around 7am in a flat on the western side of the ground floor of an eight-storey building owned by Md Shahjahan Miah in the Bhuigarh Giridhara area of Narayanganj Sadar upazila.
The injured are Md Kalam, 45, his wife Salma, 40, their son Munna, 12, daughters Munni, 10, and Kotha, 7.
According to fire service officials, locals rushed to the scene after hearing a loud explosion. The injured were later rescued and taken to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.
Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence Deputy Assistant Director Md Abdullah Al Arefin said it was initially suspected that gas had accumulated inside the closed room due to a leakage in the gas line near the kitchen in the western part of the flat.
“We suspect the explosion occurred when the tenant tried to ignite a gas lighter in the morning. We found a lighter in the room,” he said.
Dr Shaon Bin Rahman, a physician at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, said the condition of all five victims was critical.
He said Kalam suffered 95% burns, while Salma sustained 60% burns. Munna suffered 30% burns, Munni 35%, and Kotha 52%.
