Four people were killed and another was critically injured after a passenger bus collided with a private car on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Gazaria, Munshiganj, on Saturday (19 September).
The accident occurred around 2:38pm near Jamaldi Bus Stand, according to the Fire Service and Civil Defence.
The deceased were all travelling in the private car. Their identities were not immediately known.
Police said the “New Baleshwar” bus was heading to Chattogram from Dhaka when it collided with the car, which was returning to Dhaka after a lunch trip to Miami Restaurant.
The car had travelled some distance on the wrong side of the highway before attempting a U-turn when the bus hit it. The bus overturned on the road median, while the car was badly damaged.
Muhammad Shafiqul Islam, deputy assistant director of Munshiganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, said two rescue units from Gazaria Fire Station rushed to the scene and began rescue operations.
The private car driver died on the spot, and firefighters recovered his body and handed it over to highway police, he said.
Four injured people were taken to Bhoberchar Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared three of them dead, Shafiqul said.
The other injured person was referred to Dhaka in critical condition for advanced treatment.
