Four children drowned in a pond in Khanpara area of Narayanganj’s Araihazar today (20 August).
The deceased were identified as Ozaifa, 10, Afsa, 12, Riya Moni, 8, and Rubaiya, 8. All four were residents of Duptara Khanpara and students at local schools.
Araihazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sabjel Hossain confirmed the death and said police visited the scene after receiving the report.
According to police and local residents, the children went missing from their homes in the afternoon. Their families began searching for them and later found their shoes and sandals beside a pond.
Relatives and locals then searched the pond and recovered all four children from the water.
Two were taken to Araihazar Upazila Health Complex and the other two to a local clinic. Doctors at both facilities declared them dead.
Dr Shimul, an emergency department physician at Araihazar Health Complex, said the two children brought to the facility had already died. The other two had also died before reaching the clinic.
“The families have not filed any complaint. The process of handing over the bodies to the families is underway,” the OC added.
