Former Gazipur-5 MP Akhtaruzzaman has been sent to jail after completing a three-day remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order today (13 August) following a petition by the investigation officer, said Sub-Inspector (SI) Arif Reza of the prosecution division.
Akhteruzzaman was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from a house in Gulshan on 5 August.
The following day, police produced him before the court and sought a seven-day remand.
However, as the case records were unavailable, the court sent him to jail and fixed 10 August for a hearing on the remand petition.
On 10 August, the court granted police three days to interrogate him.
After the remand ended, the investigation officer sought an order to send Akhteruzzaman to jail, which the court granted today.
Akhteruzzaman’s lawyer, Morshed Hossain Shaheen, also sought bail for his client.
However, the court could not hear the petition because the original case records were unavailable and subsequently ordered that Akhteruzzaman be sent to jail.
According to the case statement, on the morning of 18 June, around 35-40 leaders and activists of the banned Awami League and Chhatra League, including Nibas Majumdar, brought out a procession near the Mohakhali bus terminal in the Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station area.
They allegedly chanted anti-government slogans and carried out various anti-state activities, including exploding cocktails and creating panic among the public.
Police later filed the case under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station over the incident.
