A police constable was injured after a group of armed attackers allegedly vandalised two restaurants and detonated several crude bombs in Rajshahi yesterday night (19 June) following a dispute over a food order.
The incident took place around 10:45pm at two restaurants – Bangla Tiffin and Bongovoj – in the Binodpur area adjacent to Rajshahi University, confirmed Motihar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Golam Kabir.
Constable Foyez of the same police station sustained injuries while responding to the incident, he said.
Witnesses and police said the attackers were carrying sticks, knives, machetes and other locally made weapons during the assault. At least four crude bombs were reportedly exploded during the attack.
According to eyewitnesses and police sources, a local man identified as Ramzan went to Bangla Tiffin around 9:30pm to buy food. An argument reportedly broke out after restaurant staff informed him that one food package would require an additional 20 minutes to prepare.
Shortly afterwards, a group allegedly associated with Ramzan returned to the area armed with knives, machetes and other weapons and carried out attacks on Bangla Tiffin in Binodpur Bazar and Bongovoj restaurant in the nearby Mondol Mor area.
The assailants also vandalised the establishments and detonated multiple crude bombs, according to police.
OC Mohammad Golam Kabir said police rushed to the scene after receiving information about the dispute and attempted to bring the situation under control.
“Ramzan went to Bangla Tiffin to buy food. The restaurant provided him with one food package and informed him that another package would take around 20 minutes to prepare. He became agitated and got into an argument with the staff,” the OC said.
“When we arrived at the scene to control the situation, Ramzan’s associates had already carried out attacks on Bangla Tiffin and Bongovoj restaurants,” he added.
Police said efforts were underway to identify and arrest those involved in the attack.
