Five students were injured after two groups of students engaged in a chase and counter-chase and exchanged blows over seating at the library of Comilla University today (27 September).
The incident took place on the university campus around noon.
The injured students were identified as Tawhidul Islam and Rudro Muhammad Shahidullah of the ICT Department, Tofayel Mahmud Nibir of the Economics Department and Ehsanul Haque of the Finance Department. The identity of another injured student could not immediately be confirmed.
The injured students received primary treatment at the university’s medical centre.
According to students, the dispute initially arose among students of the ICT, Archaeology and Anthropology departments over seating arrangements at the university library.
During the incident, ICT Department students Samin Majumder and Salman Patwari were allegedly beaten.
The students involved were later called to the proctor’s office to resolve the matter. However, the dispute could not be settled there, and another round of chasing and fighting broke out between the two groups after they left the office.
The incident triggered tension on the campus, prompting university authorities and members of the proctorial team to remain at the scene to bring the situation under control.
Rakibul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sadar Dakshin Police Station, said the incident stemmed from a senior-junior dispute among students.
“There was a fight over a senior-junior dispute inside the university. Efforts are now underway to resolve the matter. The situation on campus is currently normal,” he said.
