A fire that broke out at Kalmilata Bazar on Bijoy Sarani in the capital was brought under control after around two hours of efforts by firefighters this morning (19 May).
The blaze originated on the ground floor of the market at about 5:14am and was brought under control around 7am with the efforts of 10 firefighting units, said Lt Col Md Mahmudul Hasan, fire service director (operations and maintenance), while briefing reporters at the scene.
He said firefighters, with assistance from local residents, managed to contain the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to the nearby Cure Specialized Hospital Ltd.
According to fire service officials, the ground floor of the market houses a kitchen market, while the first floor contains various shops, including electronic goods stores.
Replying to a question, Mahmudul said the fire service received information about the blaze through a call to the National Emergency Service 999 at 5:14am.
Three firefighting units initially rushed to the spot within six minutes, while additional units later joined the operation.
He said the exact cause of the fire and the extent of the damage could be determined only after an investigation.
No casualties were reported as of the filing of this report.
