Three nomination forms were collected from BNP for the Thakurgaon-1 by-election today (15 September), with Mirza Faisal Amin, younger brother of President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, among those seeking the party ticket.
The other two aspirants are Obaidullah Masud, vice-president of Thakurgaon district BNP and a former Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chatradal leader, and Sultanul Ferdous Chowdhury Nomro, also a vice-president of the district BNP and a former upazila chairman.
The sale of nomination forms began at 11am at the BNP central office in Nayapaltan, said BNP Media Cell member Shayrul Kabir Khan.
One of the forms was collected on behalf of Mirza Faisal Amin, president of Thakurgaon district BNP and former mayor of Thakurgaon municipality. District BNP General Secretary Poygam Ali collected the form on his behalf in the presence of party leaders and activists from the district and its affiliated organisations.
The other two forms were collected on behalf of Obaidullah Masud and Sultanul Ferdous Chowdhury Nomro.
Mirza Fakhrul, the former MP for Thakurgaon-1, was elected president by parliament on 20 August. He took oath the following day, after which the seat was declared vacant.
The by-election to the constituency is scheduled to be held on 29 October. The Election Commission announced the election schedule on 10 September.
Candidates can submit their nomination forms to BNP by Wednesday. The party’s parliamentary board or standing committee is scheduled to finalise its candidate for the seat on 18 September.
