Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday (18 May) directed the authorities concerned to take effective and long-term measures to resolve the waterlogging problem of the capital.
“Effective initiatives must be taken to permanently resolve the waterlogging problem to transform Dhaka into a modern and liveable city,” he said.

Fakhrul, also BNP secretary general, was speaking at a progress review meeting held at the conference room of the local government division on development activities being implemented by Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
The meeting discussed ongoing development activities in Dhaka, the enhancement of civic services, and various aspects of infrastructure development.
Particular emphasis was placed on resolving waterlogging, ensuring the supply of safe drinking water, and developing a modern sewerage system.
The minister also instructed all relevant authorities to work in coordination to ensure a safe and pure water supply for city residents, alongside developing an improved sewerage system.
He said all ongoing development projects must be implemented within the stipulated timeframe while maintaining quality standards so that residents can quickly benefit from the initiatives.
Local Government Division Secretary Md Shahidul Hassan, DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam, project directors of various ongoing projects, and senior ministry officials were present at the meeting.
