A Dhaka court today (17 June) approved a police petition to show three individuals, including Shahed Ahmed Majumder, son of former state minister for industries Kamal Ahmed Majumder, arrested in a case filed over the attempted murder of a madrasah student during the July Uprising.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah passed the order following an application placed by the police. Public Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed the development to The Business Standard.
The two other accused shown arrested in the case are Selim Prodhan, described as an active leader and financier of the activities-banned Awami League, and Abu Sayeed, vice-chairman of Sirajganj’s Ullapara Upazila and secretary of the local Awami League unit.
Shahed Majumder also faces allegations of financing the activities of the banned Chhatra League.
Earlier in the day, the investigation officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Md Mosharaf of Gulshan Police Station, produced the three accused before the court and sought permission to formally arrest them in connection with the case.
In the petition, police stated that the accused were active Awami League leaders and financiers who allegedly attempted to suppress the July Uprising. The law enforcement agency argued that the accused were present at the scene and provided the financial support that contributed to the violence, making their arrest essential for a proper investigation.
According to the case statement, protesters had gathered in the Banshtala area south of Bhatara Police Station in the capital on 19 July 2024. At that time, the accused allegedly opened indiscriminate fire on the demonstrating students and protesters.
Nazim Uddin, a madrasah student, was shot in the head during the gunfire.
A subsequent CT scan found 180 pellets lodged in his head, of which doctors managed to remove 127. The victim’s maternal aunt later lodged the attempted murder case with Gulshan Police Station.
