A Dhaka court today (2 November) showed former Brahmanbaria-5 lawmaker Faizur Rahman arrested in a case over the attempted murder of a participant in the anti-discrimination student movement during the July uprising in the capital’s Mohammadpur area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam passed the order after a hearing today.
Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Prosecution Division confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.
Earlier, the investigation officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Mominul Islam of Mohammadpur Police Station, petitioned the court to show Faizur Rahman arrested in the case.
The former lawmaker’s lawyer, Khandaker Ahsan Habib, opposed the petition and sought bail for his client.
After the hearing, the court rejected the bail plea and ordered Faizur Rahman sent to jail.
According to the case statement, the complainant, Masud Hossain, was attacked on 19 July 2024 during the anti-discrimination student movement near the slope of Bosila Bridge and in front of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) office in Mohammadpur.
The case alleges that the attackers carried locally made weapons, pistols, shotguns, petrol bombs and cocktails.
Masud was seriously injured in indiscriminate gunfire and was admitted to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where he underwent a complicated operation on his chest, according to the case statement.
After receiving treatment for an extended period and recovering, Masud filed the attempted murder case with Mohammadpur Police Station.
