A former bank official allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself in the head with a pistol at his residence in Chattogram’s Double Mooring today (22 August), police said.
The deceased was identified as Shahid Hossain, 45, son of late Iqbal Hossain and Momtaz Begum.
Double Mooring Police Station OC Shahinur Alam told The Business Standard that they initially suspected Shahid had shot himself following a family dispute.
Police are investigating how he obtained the firearm and whether it was legally licensed.
“The firearm has been recovered. We are investigating the incident and the source of the weapon,” OC Shahinur said.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Nurul Alam Ashek, in-charge of the Chattogram Medical College Hospital police outpost, said Shahid was brought to the hospital in critical condition around 7:50am.
“According to his family, he shot himself in the head with a pistol. The attending doctor sent him to Ward 28, where he died while receiving treatment,” he said.
Shahid’s wife Sharmin told The Business Standard that he shot himself in the head with a pistol in their drawing room in the morning.
“I did not know that he had a firearm. I also do not know whether it had a licence,” she said.
Sharmin said Shahid resigned from Al-Arafah Islami Bank in September 2025, where he was last posted as a cashier at the Hathazari branch. He had been unemployed since then.
She said Shahid had attempted suicide before and was under mental, family and financial pressure at the time.
Sharmin said Shahid had taken money from several people, saying he would start a business.
“He also had debts, while many people owed him money. However, I cannot say how much he owed,” she said.
