A battery-run (three-wheeler) easy bike driver was injured after two chunks of concrete fell from the under-construction Panchabati-Muktarpur flyover onto the moving vehicle in Narayanganj’s Fatullah this afternoon (7 November).
The incident took place beneath pillar No 72 in the Kashipur area.
The injured driver was rescued and taken to hospital, but his identity could not be confirmed immediately. Officials involved in the project visited the site after the incident.
Witnesses said two large chunks of concrete fell from the upper section of the flyover pillar onto the easy bike, injuring the driver and damaging the vehicle.
The incident sparked concern among locals over the safety of traffic passing beneath the flyover.
Several local construction workers expressed concern that the concrete had separated from the reinforcement bars inside the pillar’s cast structure.
They said the problem could be a case of concrete spalling and called for inspections of the affected pillar and other sections of the flyover.
However, Wahiduzzaman, project director of the Panchabati-Muktarpur flyover, disputed this assessment.
He told The Business Standard that the incident was not caused by concrete spalling but by a concrete block left behind by workers during construction, which fell onto the vehicle.
“There are no problems elsewhere along the road,” he said, adding that the authorities hoped to have the prime minister inaugurate the flyover towards the end of December.
