The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has announced that legal action will be taken from next week against vehicles operating without Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA)-issued registration number plates and functional RFID tags.
DMP issued a public notice in this regard today (11 May), reportedly due to difficulties in identifying and prosecuting vehicles through AI-powered traffic cameras.
In the notice, DMP said many vehicles in the capital are still operating without the prescribed number plates, colours, designs and sizes set by the government. Authorities also found that some vehicle owners are using only painted registration numbers instead of official BRTA-issued plates.
According to the notice, many vehicle owners have already paid fees for number plates but have yet to collect and install them. In several cases, RFID tags installed on vehicles were also found inactive, creating difficulties in traffic management across the city.
The police headquarters urged vehicle owners and drivers to install BRTA-issued number plates in the designated positions and ensure that RFID tags attached to vehicles remain functional.
DMP further said that from next week, strict legal measures, including fines and other actions, will be taken against vehicles operating without official registration plates and RFID tags.
