A group of men attacked Professor Md Asadur Rahman, head of the ENT department at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), in the capital’s Shantinagar on Monday night (17 August).
Police later arrested one of the accused, identified as Jibon. Dr Asadur is currently receiving treatment at DMCH.
Speaking to The Business Standard, Paltan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mostafa Kamal Khan said police were yet to determine the motive behind the attack.
The arrested suspect told police that he and several others attacked Dr Asadur over the treatment of a patient, the OC said.
“However, we have not found any evidence to support this so far,” he said, adding that police are investigating the reason behind the attack.
According to police, Dr Asadur had finished seeing patients at his private chamber at Popular Hospital around 11pm and was travelling by CNG-run auto-rickshaw to his home in Mohammadpur when four to five men stopped the vehicle and attacked him with locally made weapons.
A case was filed with Paltan Police Station on Monday night against five to six people in connection with the attack.
