SalamAir is launching direct flights from Chattogram to Salalah, a city in southern Oman.
The first flight will depart from Shah Amanat International Airport tomorrow (October 28).
Service will start at two flights per week, with more to be added if passenger demand grows.
Many Bangladeshi expatriates live and work in Salalah, the capital of Oman’s Dhofar Governorate. They work in construction, agriculture, plantation management, the fruit and vegetable trade, fisheries, and various factories in the Salalah Free Zone.
SalamAir started the route with these workers in mind.
Until now, passengers had to transit through Muscat, Oman’s capital, which added to both travel time and cost. Many people from Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, and Noakhali live in Oman, and many of them previously flew via Dhaka to Muscat before reaching Salalah.
The new direct flight spares them that long, roundabout journey.
Shahnaz Alam, SalamAir’s Airport Services Manager at Chattogram Airport, said the airline has made Salalah a new hub. New destinations will be added from there, including Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), Kozhikode (India), and Chattogram (Bangladesh).
According to Alam, SalamAir previously operated 14 flights per week on the Chattogram-Oman route. Two of these will now go to Salalahwhile the other 12 will continue to Muscat. The flights will use Airbus A321
aircraft.
The direct service will also cut travel time significantly. Reaching Salalah with a transit used to take 10 to 12 hours or more, while the direct flight will take about five to five and a half hours.
Rizwanul Islam, SalamAir’s Chattogram manager, said the flight will leave Shah Amanat International Airport every Wednesday at 10:55pm for Salalah.
The total travel time will be 6 hours 20 minutes. The route will initially be served by a modern 180-seat aircraft.
Fares start at Taka 39,294 BDT, which includes a five kilograms cabin baggage allowance. A 41,534 BDT package adds 15-kg of checked baggage along with the five-kg of hand baggage.
A 42,500 BDT package offers 20-kg of checked baggage along with the five-kg of hand baggage.
