Diamond World Managing Director Dilip Kumar Agarwala was arrested by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) from a residence in the capital’s Banani area this evening (19 October).
DB chief Shafiqul Islam confirmed the arrest to The Business Standard, saying Agarwala was detained around 6pm while in hiding.
He said Agarwala was arrested at the request of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with a case filed by the agency.
Agarwala was previously arrested on 3 September 2024 by the then Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) over allegations of gold and diamond smuggling, fraud, forgery and money laundering, following the fall of the Awami League government.
RAB conducted a raid at Diamond World’s office in Gulshan that night.
He was later shown arrested in a murder case over the killing of Hridoy Ahmed, a teenager, in Badda during the quota reform movement in July 2024. Police also questioned him in custody in connection with the case.
He was subsequently released on bail.
