The footpath in front of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) has been transformed into a public space after being cleared of illegal encroachments under an initiative by Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
“The initiative aims to improve the environment of one of the capital’s busiest hospital areas, ensuring comfort for patients and their attendants,” DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam said while inaugurating the renovation work today (15 April).
According to DSCC sources, the beautification work covers around 1,350 feet, stretching from Dhaka University’s Mukarram Bhaban to Chankharpul.
The project includes the installation of 550 flower pots, planting of 650 trees, and creation of aesthetic graffiti on surrounding walls.
Seating arrangements have also been installed for attendants waiting outside the hospital, sources added.
The administrator said the initiative is not only focused on beautification but also on keeping the footpath free from encroachment, adding that coordinated efforts from all stakeholders would be required to preserve the environment in the long term.
Regarding hawker management, the official said there are plans to rehabilitate them in an organised manner to minimise public inconvenience while allowing licensed vending in designated areas at specific times and in limited numbers.
The pilot project, implemented under the supervision of DSCC’s waste management department, will be expanded to other key footpaths in the city if successful, Salam added.
