The voting in Dhaka Bar Association election for the 2026-2027 term has concluded today (30 April) with a voter turnout of 34.01%.
In the two-day election, a total of 7,069 lawyers cast their votes. Of them, 4,310 votes were casted today, while 2,759 lawyers voted yesterday (29 April) on the first day.
Chief Election Commissioner Senior Advocate Alhaj Md Bourhan Uddin said the election was held in a peaceful and orderly manner after nearly two years.
“Lawyers exercised their voting rights comfortably. The election was conducted in a very smooth and fair environment. All candidates have also expressed satisfaction over the voting process,” he added.
He further said vote counting will begin after Jumu’ah prayers tomorrow (1 May). “The ballots will first be arranged in proper sequence before counting starts. The results are expected to be announced either late Friday night or on Saturday morning,” he noted.
A total of 55 candidates have been declared valid for 23 posts, including 13 for executive positions and 10 for member posts.
Following the political changes after the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August 2024, lawyers aligned with the BNP and Gono Odhikar Parishad are contesting under the ‘Blue Panel’ (Bangladesh Nationalist Lawyers’ Unity Panel).
On the other hand, lawyers backed by Jamaat-e-Islami and the National Citizen Party (NCP) are contesting under the ‘Green Panel’ (Lawyers Unity Council).
A total of 54 candidates, including 46 from the two panels and eight independents, are contesting the election.
However, the Awami League-backed ‘White Panel’ (Combined Lawyers Coordination Council) is not participating this year due to recent political environment.
