Deputy commissioners have been directed to help make the armed forces more people-oriented, Prime Minister’s Defence Adviser Brigadier General (retd) AKM Shamsul Islam said today (5 May).
Speaking to reporters after the first session of the third day of the DC Conference at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka, he said, “At today’s session, deputy commissioners were briefed on the priorities, working methods and plans of our service chiefs on behalf of the defence ministry and the armed forces.
“We provided guidance on the role DCs should play in transforming the armed forces into a people-oriented force from the standpoint of government accountability. The philosophy of late president Ziaur Rahman was also discussed in detail, along with what role our DCs should play in that regard.”
The PM’s adviser said the session also focused on recruiting strong personnel into the military, driven by professionalism and patriotism, in line with directives from the prime minister. “We discussed what role DCs can play in this regard,” he said.
“We also discussed how to further strengthen the harmony between the army, DCs and civil administration, the kind of coordination they demonstrated during the election.”
The session was also attended by the chiefs of the army, navy and air force.
