Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested a fraudster accused of extorting money by forging the signatures of government officials and issuing fake appointment letters.
The suspect, identified as Md Bablu Kazi, 60, allegedly deceived a victim by offering him job at a land office.
A case has been filed at Pallabi Police Station in Dhaka in connection with the incident, said DB Chief and Additional Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam at a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre today (15 August).
DB Chief said to gain the victim’s confidence, he reportedly arranged him to work at the office and paid him a monthly ‘salary’ for three months.
The suspect then allegedly took Tk13 lakh from the victim.
DB Chief also said a team from the DB’s Wari Division arrested Bablu during an operation in the Mirpur area under Pallabi Police Station in Dhaka on Friday.
At the time of his arrest, DB recovered fake appointment orders bearing the seal of the Government of Bangladesh and forged signatures, as well as fake joining letters, gazettes and attendance registers.
According to the DB chief, Bablu and his associates had been operating for a long time by posing as officials of the Ministry of Land and forging signature of the level of a deputy secretary post to issue fake appointment letters.
Between 25 June and 26 July, the gang allegedly took Tk13 lakh from a resident of Nagarkanda in Faridpur, after promising him a government job.
The fraudsters reportedly gained their victims’ trust by promising jobs without examinations and telling them that payment could be made after joining the post.
After handing a fake appointment letter and gazette, the gang allegedly arranged for him to sit for work at a land office. They even made him sign a fake attendance register and paid him a small amount as ‘salary’ from their own pockets for the first three months.
Once they had secured a larger sum of money, however, the suspects allegedly cut off all contact and went into hiding.
