A crude bomb was thrown at the Chasma Hill residence of former education minister and Awami League leader Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury Nowfel in Chattogram early today (7 August).
The incident occurred around 2am, after which additional police personnel were deployed in the area.
Panchlaish Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Zahedul Islam told The Business Standard that the suspects fled after locals rushed to the scene.
“CCTV footage shows seven young men in front of the house and threw a crude bomb-like object, causing a fire in a pipeline outside the residence. When locals arrived, they fled.”
“The fire service later brought the fire under control,” the OC said.
Locals also said a group of six to seven people hurled a crude bomb-like object at the residence before fleeing as people gathered at the scene.
No casualties were reported immediately, while the extent of the damage to the property could not be confirmed, said the OC.
Earlier, on Wednesday (5 August), Nowfel joined a press conference held by ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina in India.
Some locals speculate the attack may be linked to his participation in that event, although authorities have not confirmed any motive.
