The Cox’s Bazar district administration has cancelled all temporary cards issued for operating shops on the beach dunes and decided not to grant any new permissions in the future.
The decision was announced in an order signed by the assistant commissioner of the district administration’s tourism cell yesterday (1 June).
According to the order, no new temporary cards will be issued at any point along the beach. In addition, all cards issued or renewed until 30 June 2026 will not be renewed for the 2026-27 fiscal year.
The administration said the decision was taken because cardholders failed to comply with the conditions attached to their permits.
It said the move was made in line with directives from the High Court, decisions of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and recommendations from the Department of Environment.
During a visit to Cox’s Bazar in March, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed directed authorities to free the beach dunes from illegal occupation.
Following the directive, the district administration launched an eviction drive on 12 March aimed at protecting the beach’s natural beauty and environment.
Over the course of four days, authorities removed more than a thousand temporary shops and illegal structures and declared the dunes free from encroachment.
