A Dhaka court today (7 July) issued arrest warrants against City Group Chairman Md Hasan and four former officials of Somoy Media Ltd (Somoy TV) in a fraud case over the alleged misappropriation of Tk5.35 crore in advertising revenue.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Israt Jahan passed the order after a hearing, court assistant bench officer Ankan Mondal confirmed.
The other accused are former Somoy TV Managing Director Shampa Rahman, former Director Morshedul Islam, former Head of Marketing Md Ahsanul Islam, and former Senior Manager (Marketing) Ayesha Siddika.
According to the complaint, the accused allegedly colluded to abuse their authority by issuing a notice on 1 September 2024 waiving the channel’s advertising bills, despite lacking the authority to do so.
The complaint alleges that they collected Tk5,34,58,283 in advertising payments for August 2024 from various clients but failed to deposit the money with the company’s accounts department, instead misappropriating the funds.
It further alleges that the accused ignored email notices asking them to return the money and receipt books.
The case was filed by former Somoy TV Director Ahmed Zobayer. The court had earlier taken cognisance of the complaint and summoned the accused. After they failed to appear, the court issued arrest warrants today.
