A Sylhet court today (25 June) acquitted three accused including Expatriate Welfare Minister and former Sylhet City Corporation mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury in a case filed over attempting to kill former minister and Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta.
Sylhet Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Swapan Kumar Sarkar acquitted former state minister Lutfozzaman Babar, minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury and former mayor of Habiganj municipality GK Gaus as the charges brought against them could not be proved, said Public Prosecutor Abul Hossain.
According to the prosecution, arguments in the case concluded in April this year.
On 7 April, the court recorded statements from the accused under Section 342 of the Code of Criminal Procedure regarding the allegations brought against them.
On 21 June 2004, a grenade attack was carried out during the rally of AL leader Suranjit Sengupta in Dirai Bazar of Sunamgnaj district.
A Jubo League man was killed, and 29 others were injured in the attack while the AL leader escaped unhurt.
Sub-Inspector Helal Uddin of Dirai Police Station filed a case against unidentified persons.
Later, on 22 October 2020, charges were framed against 10 people, including the three in two cases related to the grenade attack.
