Classes, exams suspended at many Dhaka schools amid heavy rain, waterlogging

Multiple schools across Dhaka suspended classes and examinations today (12 July) to ensure students’ safety amid incessant rainfall and severe waterlogging in several areas.

According to institutional sources and guardians, persistent downpours caused severe commuting hardships for students and parents, prompting authorities to call off academic activities.

Major institutions, including St Gregory High School and College, Ideal College, Ideal School and College, and Willes Little Flower School and College, suspended their regular classes.

Viqarunnisa Noon School and College postponed its scheduled half-yearly examinations due to the weather conditions.

Additionally, the half-yearly and pre-selection examinations of the day-branch of Tejgaon Government Girls’ High School were postponed. 

Guardians of students reported receiving emergency mobile text alerts and online notices from school authorities regarding the suspensions.

One parent, Kashem, said, “Although classes were supposed to be held in the morning, parents were later informed by a message on their phones that classes had been suspended due to rain.”

The closure also extended to peripheral areas, with schools like Sunflower Kindergarten in Keraniganj suspending activities due to flooded roads.

Beyond the capital, the ongoing Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations under the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Chittagong, have been suspended until 16 July due to the adverse weather.

In Dhaka, continuous morning rains left several areas – including Panthapath, Green Road, Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, and Tejgaon – heavily waterlogged, severely disrupting vehicular movement and leaving commuters stranded.

Some school authorities stated that revised schedules for the postponed classes and examinations will be announced once weather conditions return to normal.
