Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said the government is committed to creating an environment where citizens can visit police stations without fear and directly report problems without having to go through any intermediary.
“Police’s primary responsibility is to protect and serve the people. Every police station must become a place of trust and confidence for everyone. We are committed to ensuring an environment where citizens can come to police stations without fear and voluntarily, and can directly report their problems without having to go through any intermediary,” he said.
The minister made the remarks during a surprise visit to Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Tejgaon Police Station this afternoon (22 August) to inspect the law and order situation, infrastructure and quality of police services.
Inspector General of Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir, DMP Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed and other senior police officials accompanied him during the visit.
Salahuddin inspected various parts of the station building, including administrative rooms, the duty officer’s room, investigation officers’ offices, the lock-up, police barracks and dining facilities.
During his inspection of the barracks, he enquired about accommodation facilities for police personnel, the quality of food served at the mess and cleanliness.
He also sought information about the schedules for night and shift duties and the working conditions of police personnel stationed at the police station.
The home minister also spoke directly with citizens who had come to the station to seek police services.
He listened to people who had come to file general diaries (GDs) or complaints and instructed the officer-in-charge and other relevant officials to resolve their grievances as quickly and transparently as possible.
The surprise visit was aimed at assessing the station’s overall activities and ensuring that citizens receive police services properly and without unnecessary barriers.
