A Chattogram court today (20 May) rejected bail and other petitions filed on behalf of Chinmoy Krishna Das in the lawyer Saiful Islam Alif murder case, while completing the testimony and cross-examination of the victim’s father, Jamal Uddin.
The proceedings took place at the Speedy Trial Tribunal in Chattogram presided over by Judge Md Zahidul Haque.
One of the key accused, Chinmoy Krishna Das, appeared virtually during the hearing, while other jailed accused were produced before the court physically.
Lawyer for the plaintiff and Assistant Public Prosecutor Md Raihanul Wazed Chowdhury said Jamal Uddin appeared before the court for the sixth time for cross-examination.
However, the defence again sought additional time for the hearing, which the court rejected.
The tribunal later fixed 24 June for recording testimony from the next witness.
According to the prosecution, the defence submitted three petitions on behalf of Chinmoy Krishna Das, seeking bail, medical treatment and an adjournment of the cross-examination on grounds of his lawyer’s illness.
However, the court rejected all three applications as they were not submitted in person by the defence counsel.
According to the case statement, clashes broke out in the Chattogram court premises on 26 November 2024, centring on a bail hearing for Chinmoy Krishna Das in a sedition case. During the violence, lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was allegedly beaten and hacked to death.
Later, the victim’s father, Jamal Uddin, filed the murder case with Kotwali Police Station.
