Police have arrested a local Chatradal leader over an alleged rape of an 18-year-old HSC second-year student in Jashore’s Chaugachha.
Confirming the arrest, Chaugachha Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mamunur Rashid said that they have arrested the accused around 9pm yesterday (1 August) following a written complaint filed by the victim.
Arafat Hossain Rabbi, senior joint general secretary of Chaugachha Government College unit Chatradal, 22, is son of Md Selim Reza of Balidapara village in Fulsara union No 1.
According to the case statement, the student approached Arafat, her neighbour and maternal cousin, for help obtaining a national identity card.
As the upazila election office was closed on Saturday due to government holiday, Arafat took her to Chaugachha town around 9am, the complaint said.
He allegedly misled her and took her to the house of Jahanara Begum, whom he knew, in Ribillipara under ward no 4 of Chaugachha municipality.
The student alleged that Arafat raped her against her will there, leaving her unwell. After feeling somewhat better, she returned home and told her parents about the incident, according to the complaint.
Later that evening, the student and her mother went to Chaugachha Police Station and filed a written complaint.
Based on the complaint, Sub-Inspector Abdus Sattar along with others arrested Arafat.
OC Mamunur Rashid said,”The victim’s family has filed a written complaint in the case. Arafat Hossain Rabbi has been arrested.”
“Arafat will be produced before a Jashore court on Sunday. Other legal proceedings are underway,” the OC added.
