Police arrested the caretaker of a mango orchard early today (26 May) for allegedly raping a class-four schoolboy when he went to pick mangoes at the garden in Kumarkhali upazila.
The arrestee is Wahed Ali, 50, son of late Rajab Ali Biswas of Tarapur village in the upazila.
Later in the day, a court sent him to jail when police produced him before it.
The alleged incident took place on Sunday morning.
According to locals, the boy went to the field with goats and later entered the orchard to collect mangoes. The accused allegedly raped him there.
The boy later narrated the incident to his mother.
Local influential figures pressured the family to settle the matter through a salish (village arbitration), which was scheduled for Monday evening.
However, police rushed to the village following information and foiled the arbitration.
Later, the victim’s father filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act at Kumarkhali Police Station on Monday night.
Following the case, police arrested the accused in the early hours of Tuesday.
