By-election to two parliamentary constituencies – Bogura-6 and Sherpur-3 – will be held on 9 April, as the Election Commission announced the schedule today (24 February).
EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed announced the schedule at a press briefing held at the Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital’s Agargaon.
As per the schedule, the deadline for submitting nomination papers is 2 March, the scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on 5 March and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is 14 March.
Earlier, on Sunday (22 February), Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud said the commission would hold by-elections to the two parliamentary seats by 14 April.
Masud said the EC is trying to complete the elections before “Pohela Boishakh” as the rainy season and storms are common after that period.
“We hope we will be able to do it before that,” he said.
Responding to a question about postal ballots, the commissioner said postal voting will also remain in place for the by-election. BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman contested the 12 February general election from two constituencies – Bogura-6 and Dhaka-17 – and was elected from both.
However, he vacated the Bogura-6 seat for a by-election and took oath as a member of parliament from Dhaka-17.
Meanwhile, on 4 February, the EC cancelled the election to Sherpur-3 following the death of Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Nuruzzaman Badal.
Elections were held on 12 February in 299 out of the country’s 300 constituencies, excluding Sherpur-3.
The EC published a gazette notification of 297 elected MPs on 12 February, keeping the results of Chattogram-2 and Chattogram-4 constituencies withheld in line with court decisions.
On 17 February, 296 newly elected MPs took oath.
The 296 newly elected MPs include 208 from BNP, 68 from Jamaat, seven independents, six from NCP, two from Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis and one each from Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP), Gono Odhikar Parishad, Ganasamhati Andolan, Khelafat Majlis and Islami Andolan Bangladesh.
