Two accused have confessed to their involvement in the murder of a man whose body was recovered from the Banani section of the Dhaka Elevated Expressway.
The two accused, a bus supervisor Saju alias Limon, 26, and helper Mahbub Alam Moni, 19, gave confessional statements under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure today (6 September).
The court later ordered that they be sent to jail.
Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam granted a four-day remand for bus driver Sohel Rana, 41, who drives a Bablu Paribahan bus on the Dhaka-Jamalpur route, in which the victim was travelling.
Earlier in the day, the three accused were produced before the court, where Saju and Moni agreed to give voluntary confessional statements.
Banani Police Station Sub-Inspector Nazrul Islam Talukder, also the investigating officer in the case, then sought permission to record their statements under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
The investigating officer also sought a seven-day remand for Sohel.
Following the petitions, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir recorded Saju’s statement, while Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Siddiq Azad recorded Moni’s statement. They were subsequently sent to jail.
According to the case statement, Ismail Hossain left his home in Jamalpur for Gazipur around 4:30am on 4 September. He was carrying Tk5 lakh in cash from the sale of land in his village, along with various food items.
His son, Hasan, was waiting for him at Jirani bus stand in Gazipur. However, Hasan could not contact his father as his mobile phone was switched off.
Later, Hasan learned that the body of an unidentified man had been recovered from the Dhaka Elevated Expressway between pillars 179 and 180 on the Kakoli-Kuril section under Banani Police Station.
No cash or goods that Ismail had allegedly been carrying from his village were found with the body.
His relatives later identified the body as that of Ismail Hossain.
Ismail’s son Md Hasan filed a murder case with Banani Police Station on 4 September.
Police arrested the three accused in the capital the following day.
