The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has launched a high-resolution climate projection database and an advanced storm surge forecasting model to strengthen disaster preparedness and improve public safety amid growing climate risks.
The announcement was made at a national seminar titled “Climate Projection and Storm Surge Modelling for Effective Disaster Risk Reduction in Bangladesh” held at the Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation in Dhaka today (30 July), according to a press release.
Developed under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)-funded technical assistance project, Strengthening the Capacity of Weather and Climate Services, the new tools are designed to improve forecasting accuracy and support disaster risk reduction efforts across the country.
According to BMD, the climate projections indicate an increase in monsoon rainfall in the country’s northeastern region, a heightened risk of flash floods due to more frequent extreme rainfall events, persistent heatwaves even after the onset of the monsoon, and denser fog during winter and the post-monsoon season.
The department said the advanced storm surge forecasting model will provide more accurate predictions of storm surge heights, inundation patterns and potential flood-affected areas. It will also enhance daily wave height forecasts for coastal regions.
BMD said the storm surge forecasting model is already operational, with forecasts now available on its official website.
The initiative is aligned with the World Meteorological Organization’s Early Warnings for All (EW4All) programme, which aims to ensure that people worldwide are protected by life-saving early warning systems.
