Biswadip Das, a senior editor at bdnews24.com, has been appointed acting editor-in-chief of the online news outlet following the death of its founding Editor-in-Chief Toufique Imrose Khalidi.
The management appointed Biswadip to lead the newsroom on Sunday, a few days after Khalidi’s death, reports bdnews24.com.
“Editor-in-Chief Toufique Imrose Khalidi died at a London hospital on Friday after suffering a brain haemorrhage. We are trying to come to terms with the loss. During this interim period, Biswadip Das will lead the newsroom as acting editor-in-chief,” a bdnews24.com spokesperson said.
The organisation began in 2005 as BDNEWS, a news provider operating in a format similar to a news agency. Following a change in ownership and management in 2006, it took a new direction.
In July that year, a new management team led by Khalidi transformed the organisation into Bangladesh’s first online news company. On 23 October, bdnews24.com started 24-hour operations in its new form.
Khalidi served as editor-in-chief and managing director of the organisation until his death.
Biswadip joined bdnews24.com as an editor during the organisation’s transformation and later became a senior editor.
He studied English literature, journalism and law. He began his journalism career at The Financial Express and later held key positions at The Daily Star and Independent Television.
