A Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight bound for Toronto made an emergency landing at London’s Heathrow Airport after the flight’s first officer fell ill mid-air.
Flight BG305 departed from Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport yesterday (7 May) for Toronto with a scheduled stopover at Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport in Rome.
According to Biman spokesperson Boshra Islam, the incident occurred shortly after the aircraft resumed its journey from Rome to Toronto. The first officer reportedly became unwell during the flight, prompting the captain to take immediate precautionary measures.
Considering the medical emergency, the captain decided to divert the aircraft to Heathrow Airport, where it landed safely at 11:50am local time.
Emergency medical support was provided upon arrival, and the sick co-pilot was quickly transferred to a nearby hospital for treatment, Boshra Islam said.
To minimise further disruption, Biman arranged for another pilot who had been on standby in London to take over the operation. The flight later resumed its journey to Toronto, departing Heathrow at 2:55pm local time.
Biman officials said passenger safety remained the airline’s top priority and the situation was handled in accordance with international aviation safety procedures.
