The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has stressed the need to raise public awareness to help prevent frequent accidents linked to the use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
“The government has taken several initiatives to ensure the safe use of LPG as its usage continues to expand rapidly across households, commercial establishments and industries in Bangladesh,” the commission’s Chairman Jalal Ahmed said at a discussion on safety and security in the LPG sector this morning (17 May) with participation from various stakeholders.
“The government is focusing on ensuring the sector expands in a controlled and safe manner,” he added.
Jalal Ahmed further said authorities are working to prevent unregulated or “mushroom growth” in the LPG sector and instead establish a regulated framework to ensure safe management.
He added that effective measures would be taken in cooperation with all stakeholders.
Speakers at the event also said that ensuring safety measures alone would not be sufficient, stressing the need for long-term and coordinated initiatives to strengthen the country’s broader energy security.
They noted that many household accidents occur because of a lack of awareness and failure to properly follow safety guidelines. Participants emphasised the need to intensify awareness campaigns to reduce such incidents.
Leaders of the LPG Autogas Station Owners Association also called for simplifying and improving the licensing process for autogas stations.
