Court grants two-day remand over alleged firearms plot

A Dhaka court today (24 August) placed four people, including Barrister Md Zaki Ullah Bahar, on a two-day police remand in a firearms case filed with Sutrapur Police Station.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman passed the order after the case investigation officer, Md Russell Molla, produced the accused before the court and sought seven days’ remand for each.
The court granted two days’ remand for each accused, Prosecution Sub-Inspector Abu Sayeed confirmed.
The other accused sent to remand are Md Anwarul Haque, 62, Zakir Hossain Liton, 48, and Hiru Barua Babu, 36.
According to the remand petition, the accused allegedly brought firearms and ammunition to the scene in a white Pajero in collusion with one another.
Police sought their remand to identify and arrest other accused who remain at large and determine the source of the firearms and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the case statement, police went to Bhuiyan Motors at Nazim Uddin Baro Bhuiyan Market on Northbrook Hall Road under Sutrapur Police Station on 19 August.
Eight to nine people, including Bahar, who is also accused in a case filed with Turag Police Station, allegedly entered the shop shortly afterwards. Two of them were carrying shopping bags.
When police personnel asked what was inside the bags, the men allegedly left them behind and quickly left the shop.
Police later searched the bags and recovered two locally made pipe guns and two live 12-bore cartridges.
They also seized a 64GB HP USB flash drive containing CCTV footage from the scene and surrounding areas, along with three mobile phones allegedly used by the arrested accused.
Police alleged that the accused had been conspiring for a long time to misappropriate market and shop goods owned by Bhuiyan Motors proprietor Hafiz Ullah Bhuiyan for financial gain.
The case alleges that the firearms and ammunition were placed at the shop as part of a plan to implicate Bhuiyan in a false arms case.
