A student of the University of Barishal has begun a hunger strike after failing five subjects, alleging that he was deliberately failed by the department chairman for speaking out about the need for infrastructural development at the university.
Shakib Mia, a student of the Department of Geology and Mining, started the hunger strike at 12pm today (16 April) on the ground floor of the university.
Speaking on the matter, Shakib said, “I have raised my voice on various necessary issues of the university at different times. This is not the first time; similar actions have been taken against me before.”
However, the chairman of the Department of Geology and Mining, Dhiman Kumer Roy, said the student’s exam scripts were evaluated twice.
“According to university rules, a student must pass written, practical, and viva examinations. He did not obtain passing marks in all components,” he said.
Dhiman added, “He also failed in two subjects in his first year and could not pass even after retaking the exams. If nothing is written in the script, we cannot pass a student.”
University Proctor Rahat Hossain Faisal said, “Unjust demands cannot be accepted. The student has performed very poorly. It is not possible to pass him by force.”
Vice-Chancellor Mohammad Taufiq Alam said, “The student had also approached me. He has been advised to apply to the examiner. Without a formal application, the issue cannot be resolved.”
