Bangladesh and Iraq have discussed ways to strengthen bilateral trade and economic cooperation, with a focus on expanding collaboration in pharmaceuticals, leather goods, ready-made garments, ceramics, and agro-products.
The issues came up during a courtesy call by Iraqi Chargé d’Affaires in Dhaka Wisam Hussein Ali Al Ithawi on State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam at the latter’s office in Dhaka today (10 May), according to a press release.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening Bangladesh-Iraq relations and deepening cooperation in bilateral and multilateral forums.
The state minister thanked the Iraqi leadership and government for congratulating the BNP-led government after its victory in the 13th parliamentary election and recalled Iraq’s recognition of Bangladesh in 1972 as the first Arab country to recognise the newly independent nation.
Shama Obaed Islam expressed concern over the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and voiced hope for the early restoration of peace and stability in the region.
She also appreciated the Iraqi government for hosting Bangladeshi nationals and ensuring their welfare and safety.
The discussions focused on enhancing economic engagement between the two countries through increased trade and new cooperation opportunities in key export-oriented sectors, along with bilateral cooperation, manpower issues, and regional developments.
The state minister further thanked Iraq for supporting Bangladesh’s candidacy in the election for the president of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
