Bangladesh today (22 July) strongly condemned the Houthis’ declaration of a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia, warning that such actions could escalate tensions, undermine regional peace and stability, and disrupt international maritime trade.
“The government of Bangladesh strongly condemns the declaration of a naval blockade against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by the Houthis,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press release here today (22 July).
Bangladesh said such actions risk escalating tensions in the region while posing threats to peace, stability and the smooth flow of international maritime commerce.
Reaffirming its commitment to freedom of navigation, Bangladesh stressed the importance of uninterrupted and lawful navigation along international maritime routes, including in the Red Sea, in accordance with international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
The Foreign Ministry underscored the critical importance of the Red Sea to the global economy, describing it as a vital conduit for international trade and energy supplies.
“Any disruption in the Red Sea, which is a vital conduit of global trade and energy supply, would result in serious economic consequences for people around the world,” the statement said.
Against this backdrop, Bangladesh called for ensuring the safety and security of all seafarers and goods passing through international maritime routes.
Dhaka also urged all parties to respect their obligations under international law and refrain from actions that could jeopardise maritime security.
It called upon the parties concerned to engage in diplomacy to prevent further escalation.
Expressing deep concern over continuing instability in the Middle East, Bangladesh reiterated its longstanding position that conflicts should be resolved through peaceful means.
“Bangladesh remains deeply concerned about the continuing instability in the Middle East and reiterates its consistent position that dialogue, diplomacy and peaceful engagement are the only sustainable means to resolve conflicts,” the Foreign Ministry said.
