Bangladesh has called for stronger global cooperation to protect migrants’ rights, prevent irregular migration, reduce migration costs, ensure fair wages, strengthen accountability and expand migrants’ access to justice.
Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury made the call yesterday (7 May) while addressing the general debate of the International Migration Review Forum at the United Nations headquarters in New York, according to a press release.
He said Bangladesh is strengthening accountability and expanding migrants’ access to justice through a “whole-of-government and whole-of-society” approach.
The minister also said Bangladesh has formed a Migration Compact Taskforce and adopted a national action plan for 2026–2030 as part of implementing the Global Compact for Migration (GCM) to ensure safe, orderly and regular migration.
He said Bangladesh has already implemented seven of the 10 commitments made during the first IMRF, while also submitting six new commitments and joining two regional initiatives.
Referring to climate change as a growing driver of migration, the minister called for reliable financing and technical support for affected countries.
He also reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to working in coordination with international partners to ensure safe migration and sustainable development.
