BNP acting secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has accused the activities-banned Awami League and its associates of attempting to create unrest in the garment industry and other sectors to destabilise the country.
Speaking at a press conference at the BNP’s central office in Naya Paltan today (6 November), where he also announced the party’s programmes marking National Revolution and Solidarity Day tomorrow, he alleged that people linked to the ousted party are behind recent incidents of factory vandalism, arson, and violence. He also claimed that such activities are unrelated to genuine labour movements.
“Workers may have legitimate demands, and those demands have been discussed. But even after the demands were accepted, incidents of factory vandalism, setting fire to police boxes and vehicles, and beating a worker to death took place,” Rizvi said.
He claimed that several alleged instigators have been arrested in connection with recent incidents, most of whom are leaders of Jubo League and Chhatra League.
He also alleged that some factory owners have close links with the Awami League and that factories have been suddenly closed to provoke workers.
BNP to hold procession tomorrow
The BNP will hold a procession in Dhaka tomorrow to mark National Revolution and Solidarity Day, with party Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman scheduled to attend. Tarique will inaugurate the procession in front of the party’s central office in Nayapaltan following an opening address.
The procession will start in Naya Paltan, turn right near the chief justice’s residence, pass Hotel InterContinental, and move through Banglamotor and Farmgate before ending on Manik Mia Avenue.
Earlier, at around 8:30am, the prime minister will visit the graves of martyred President Ziaur Rahman and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to offer Fateha and pay tribute, accompanied by senior party leaders.
Rizvi said the BNP’s seven-day programme marking the occasion began yesterday. Processions will also be held in most districts and metropolitan cities across the country tomorrow.
Rizvi said the spirit of 7 November has inspired subsequent movements for democracy and national sovereignty, including the July Uprising. He said the events of 7 November 1975 created an opportunity to strengthen democratic practices and national independence and sovereignty.
He also referred to the 1990 mass uprising against the rule of HM Ershad as a reflection of that spirit. Asked whether there are concerns about possible violence surrounding tomorrow’s procession, Rizvi said the government and the public are prepared, adding that maintaining law and order is the responsibility of law enforcement agencies.
He also stressed that legitimate workers’ movements should be distinguished from vandalism, arson, and attacks on law enforcement infrastructure.
