A Dhaka court yesterday (4 August) sent folk singer, composer and music director Mujib Pardeshi to jail in a Tk10 lakh cheque dishonour case.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah passed the order following a hearing.
Sub-Inspector Helal Uddin of the prosecution division confirmed the matter.
Idris Ali Biswas filed the case against Mujib Pardeshi with a Magura court in 2022 over the dishonour of a cheque for Tk10 lakh.
On 15 March 2023, Magura’s Second Joint Sessions Judge Muhammad Anwar Sadat sentenced him to one year’s rigorous imprisonment and fined him Tk10 lakh, equivalent to the value of the cheque.
As Pardeshi remained absconding, the court issued an arrest warrant against him.
Acting on the warrant, Uttara West Police arrested him in the capital on 3 August. Police later produced him before the Dhaka court and sought an order to detain him in jail.
The court subsequently rejected his bail petition and sent him to jail.
Shafiqul Islam, a lawyer for the complainant, said the accused had shown no respect for the law and had remained at large despite being aware of the case.
He argued that granting Pardeshi bail would harm the complainant’s interests.
