Adani Power Jharkhand Ltd’s Unit-2 synchronised with Bangladesh’s national grid at 12:04pm today (13 September), three days after it went offline following a technical problem in its feed unit.
With the synchronisation, power supply is expected to increase, creating some breathing space to manage severe load shedding sweeping across the country.
Md Zahurul Islam, member (production) of the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), confirmed the synchronisation to The Business Standard.
The unit will take several hours to reach its optimal generation capacity, officials said.
At 9am, power supply from Adani was recorded at 758MW.
Adani has been supplying around 750-760MW since Thursday (10 September), when Unit-2 was shut down following a technical problem with its feed unit.
In a short message sent to TBS through its PR agency earlier today, Adani Power said Unit-2 was successfully lit up at 5:17am, ahead of schedule, with synchronisation expected by 11:30am.
Before the unit went offline at around 1am on Thursday, Adani was supplying around 1,430MW to Bangladesh.
A feed unit, also known as a boiler feed pump, in the main water supply system of Unit-2 had developed a fault, forcing the generating unit to shut down.
The boiler feed pump is a critical component of a thermal power plant, as it continuously pumps high-pressure water into the steam boiler. Any malfunction can disrupt boiler operations and trigger an automatic shutdown as a safety measure.
The latest technical disruption follows a series of supply interruptions at the Adani plant in recent weeks.
The plant had earlier reduced generation due to severe congestion on the railway network, which disrupted coal transportation to the Godda plant in India.
Adani Power said restrictions on coal transportation and loading had affected coal availability, prompting it to optimise generation and prioritise supply during evening peak hours.
Adani Power’s Godda plant has two units, each with an installed capacity of 800MW. Its combined actual generation capacity, however, is around 1,496MW.
