The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against two people over the alleged embezzlement of Tk4.38 crore from the vault of Agrani Bank’s Laldighi East Corporate Branch in Chattogram, with part of the money reportedly used to establish a cattle farm.
The accused are Kamrul Hasan, 41, a senior bank officer and the branch’s cash-in-charge, and his associate Jahurullah Tanvir, 25.
Md Al Amin, deputy director of the ACC’s Chattogram District Office-1, filed the case today (19 October) and confirmed the development to The Business Standard.
According to the case statement, the money was allegedly removed from the bank vault at different times between 1 June 2025 and 9 August 2026.
The discrepancy came to light on 9 August, when bank officials reconciled the cash balance after the day’s banking operations. An examination of accounts, vault records and related documents found a shortfall of Tk4.38 crore, the complaint said.
The ACC alleged that Kamrul, who was responsible for cash and vault management, failed to provide a satisfactory explanation despite repeated requests from senior bank officials. An internal investigation subsequently uncovered the suspected embezzlement.
According to the complaint, the accused concealed the shortage by placing Tk100 notes inside bundles recorded as containing Tk1,000 notes.
Although the bundles appeared to contain the declared amounts, the actual cash held in the vault was lower than the balance recorded in the bank’s books, the complaint alleged.
Part of the allegedly embezzled money was used to establish a cattle farm named Ishraq Agro in Uttar Burishchar, Hathazari, through a joint venture between the two accused, the ACC said.
The farm currently has around 50–60 cattle of different breeds, according to the case statement.
Bank authorities detained the two men on 10 August and informed police. Agrani Bank General Manager Mostak Ahmed subsequently filed a case against them with Kotwali Police Station, after which a court sent them to jail.
They remain in custody.
The matter was later referred to the ACC for investigation and legal action as it fell within the commission’s jurisdiction.
According to ACC records, the commission’s headquarters approved the filing of a regular case on 18 October. The Chattogram district office filed the case the following day.
