The Election Commission has upheld the nomination of BNP candidate Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad in Cumilla‑3 for the 13th parliamentary election.
The announcement came yesterday (19 January) after the EC decided to reject the appeal filed against accepting Kaikobad’s nomination papers. As a result, his candidacy remains valid.
Earlier, the returning officer had declared Kaikobad’s nomination valid. However, Jamaat‑e‑Islami candidate Md Yusuf Sohel appealed to the EC seeking cancellation of his nomination papers, alleging dual citizenship.
Although Sunday was the final day of appeal hearings, EC disposed of all other appeals, but kept the decision on the appeal against Kaikobad pending.
The appeal alleged that Kaikobad had acquired Turkish citizenship and held a Turkish passport. In response, BNP’s lawyers argued that Kaikobad had abandoned his Turkish citizenship.
After hearing the appeal, EC decided to upload Kaibokad’s nomination.
According to the constitution, anyone with dual citizenship is ineligible to contest national elections. Although several nominations were initially declared valid, appeals were filed with the EC seeking cancellation of candidacies on grounds of dual citizenship. In such cases, the EC delivered its decisions during the hearings.
