A group of assailants allegedly attacked police and snatched away a detained Jubo Dal leader, Shamim Mia, in Narayanganj’s Rupganj upazila today (5 May), leaving several officers injured.
The incident took place around 2:30am in the Chanpara Punarbasan Centre area under Kayetpara union.
Shamim, a senior joint convener of the upazila Jubo Dal, is accused in multiple cases, including murder, arms possession, drug-related offences, and attacks on law enforcement, said Mehedi Islam, senior assistant superintendent of police (Narayanganj Circle C).
According to police, a team led by Mehedi Islam and Rupganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge AHM Salahuddin conducted an operation to arrest Shamim, who had been absconding for a long time.
Police said that after Shamim was detained, his associates gathered at the scene and surrounded the officers.
The attackers then allegedly assaulted the police team and forcibly took Shamim away from custody. Several police personnel were injured during the incident.
Following the attack, members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and additional police forces rushed to the area and rescued the besieged officers, Mehedi said.
Later, a joint operation was launched in the area, during which 12 individuals were arrested, including Shamim Mia’s wife, Sathi Akter.
Mehedi added that a case has been filed with Rupganj Police Station and operations are ongoing to detain others involved.
