Train movement on the Dhaka-Northern region route remained suspended for about an hour after a sand-laden truck broke down on a railway crossing in Gazipur’s Kaliakair, this morning (5 May).
Services resumed after railway workers removed the stranded vehicle. Several trains were delayed during the disruption.
The incident occurred at the Sonakhali railway crossing on the Kaliakair-Dhamrai road at around 9am.
Railway engineers and rescue workers reached the spot after receiving information and removed the truck, restoring train movement at around 10am, Mahmudul Hasan, station master of Joydebpur Railway Junction, confirmed the matter.
According to railway and local sources, the truck’s wheels became stuck while crossing the railway line, causing it to break down on the track. Locals attempted to move the vehicle but were unsuccessful, forcing a halt to train operations on the route.
Sonakhali gate master Gopinath Mondal said multiple trains, including the Nilphamari’s Chilahati-bound Nilsagar Express, were left stranded due to the incident.
Locals alleged that potholes on both sides of the crossing often cause heavy vehicles to get stuck. They said the lack of road maintenance has led to repeated incidents, posing risks to train movement.
Regular commuters have called for urgent repairs and a long-term solution to ensure uninterrupted rail communication.
The station master said train services have now returned to normal following the removal of the truck.
